Part way through this semester we were given workshops and tutorials in various casting methods. We then received a brief consisting of a weeklong project for the student medal competition held by the British art medal society. The brief was very open so I chose to relate my medal back to Dundee and also my research project. Since I had been looking at gothic architecture and the beautifully adorned old buildings of Dundee, I chose to address the issue of new buildings overtaking the traditional elements of Dundee. The back of the medal features the V & A as not only will this become a major iconic landmark of Dundee, it also perfectly depicts modern architecture replacing old buildings.

I made my medal by carving into a block of wax. This was the first time I have properly tried wax carving and I absolutely LOVE it! It suits me really well, it’s easy to get a lot of control, precision, and detail into a piece.
